Manual J, S, and D Calculations
Manual J calculations estimate residential heating and cooling loads using the home’s dimensions, orientation, windows, insulation and design conditions. The result provides the starting point for equipment selection. Square footage or the existing unit’s size alone is not a substitute for evaluating the building.
Manual S equipment selection uses the calculated loads and manufacturer performance data to evaluate heating and cooling equipment for the project. This step connects the building’s needs to a specific equipment choice. Confirm the proposed equipment and design assumptions before installation.
Manual D duct design addresses how the system delivers air to individual rooms. It considers airflow requirements, the duct route and resistance through the distribution system. Coordinate the design with the selected equipment and available building space; a duct leakage test answers a different question.
